How I write stories? Sadat Hassan Manto

How I write stories? Sadat Hassan Manto

Honorable ladies and gentlemen! I've been asked to explain how I write stories. This “how” is problematic. What can I tell you about how I write stories? It is a very convoluted matter. With this “how” before me I could say I sit on the sofa in my room, take out paper and pen, utter bismillah, and start writing, while all three of my daughters keep making a lot of noise around me. I talk to them as I write, settle their quarrels, make salad for myself, and, if someone drops by for a visit,…Read more …

Inspiration Illustrated – Zen Pencils

Inspiration Illustrated – Zen Pencils

We rarely come across something that is sheer inspiration through and through and you find yourself overwhelmed by somebody's work and not just the aesthetic side of it, but the whole aura that it succeeds to project  strikes you with such formidable  impact, you want to be like them, you want to do something too. I bumped into this blog a few years ago when it wasn't very well known and I was blown away. It happens rarely that a combo of words and illustrations put together are so fittingly impeccable, meticulously articulated that your heart…Read more …
Book Review – Death of Ivan Ilyich (Leo Tolstoy)

Book Review – Death of Ivan Ilyich (Leo Tolstoy)

Tolstoy's genius percolates through every word. The pain of Ivan is in fact Tolstoy's own excruciating suffering while going through a particular phase in his life. A phase when he was groping for answers, trying to make sense of life and justify his own. And to understand death, or at least think over the most undeniable fact of life. A difficult book, obviously, but it provides a much needed instance of clarity to glance over your own life and to see and recognize the true nature of happiness. To tell apart genuine moments…Read more …

Book Review – The Fall (Albert Camus)

Book Review – The Fall (Albert Camus)

How foolish I was to assume this would be a quick little read. I could not have been more wrong. I physically feel exhausted. How did Camus write this? The fall is as dense as they come, bitter, excruciating. Forces you to cogitate. The ideas are so repugnant and yet they keep gnawing inside your head. The words are like evil dark matter that establishes its authority right from the start and stays there dictating, vandalizing your property. I cannot believe I am giving this a 5 star rating. I don't know, perhaps…Read more …

Jani and the thin guy – How much is 2 + 2 ?

“How much is 2+2?” The thin, ordinarily dressed guy inquired while lighting his cheap brand of cigarette with a match. “What was that?” Jani, an average guy with average looks, height and a very clear, weary expression on his face asked in return, which essentially was to imply how foolish of a question he thought the thin guy had asked. The thin guy shrugged as he took a very large puff and smoke and words came out of his mouth intermittently, “how much is 2+2?”, and it was followed by a very lengthy…Read more …

The other side of hope

Behind the garden of hope there are ruins. A palpitating heart, afraid to accept the other side of hope. Barren, fathomless, dead planes. Beneath the silver cloud of hope there is shade, beneath the silver cloud of hope there is darkness! For a wounded soul there is fear, for a believing soul there is survival. For a survived heart there are smiles, infinite colors and showers in the meadows of submission. Eternity breathes in a state of nothingness. Slow, calm, lungful breaths. You find hope as the other side of hope.Read more …
